NEW YORK CITY, NY & BALTIMORE, MD – August 26, 2020 - The Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) is excited to announce the addition of Northern Virginia FC from Leesburg, VA. Founded in 1998, Nova FC has 23 years experience developing players and competing in the top leagues on the east coast including their Virginia Hammers FC competing in the USL2 and Northern Virginia Royals who joined the then USISLD3 in 1998. Northern Virginia FC has competed in both the UPSL and the Washington Premier League over the years and joins a growing list of elite, highly competitive Mid-Atlantic clubs joining the EPSL including Maryland Bobcats FC (Montgomery County, MD), VA UNITED (Woodbridge, VA), and Steel Pulse FC (Baltimore, MD).
Northern Virginia FC has created a top to bottom football club that includes affiliations with youth clubs and a supporter’s club (The Evergreen Army). The club plays its home matches at the impressive Evergreen Sports Complex in Leesburg, VA which recently hosted the mid-Atlantic region of the NISA Independent Cup. Northern Virginia FC has had many notable players spend time with the club including MLS players Alex Horwath, Bryan Namoff, Curt Onalfo, Troy Perkins, Mark Simpson, and AJ Wood.
EPSL President Bill George said, “we are thrilled to add a club like Northern VA FC that has been part of the DMV soccer community for over twenty years, has competed in the USLD3, and has trained many professional and aspiring professional players. The caliber of EPSL mid-Atlantic clubs is superb and clearly the low cost, open, transparent model of the EPSL is attractive to clubs.”
Nova FC General Manager Mo Sheta said, “We are happy to join the EPSL in an effort to give our players an opportunity to play at the next level year round. Providing a higher level of soccer since 1998 Nova FC is happy to add the EPSL to our growing program! We look forward to competing with some of the best clubs on the east coast!”
About the Eastern Premier Soccer League
Formed in 2020, the EPSL is a 501(c) non-profit corporation, which is owned by the member clubs and the feeder leagues. Unlike other national and regional leagues, the clubs and feeder leagues will participate in governance including the establishing of fees, prize money, and schedule in order to keep costs down and minimize travel. The EPSL is looking to establish agreements with other local leagues as either a promotion/relegation feeder league or through a cooperative league agreement to preserve and maintain the relevancy of elite local leagues by marketing as members of the EPSL. Through either pro/rel or this association of leagues, local leagues can collectively market themselves as entry points to higher level playing opportunities and leagues of choice for competitive amateur soccer.
In July of 2020 EPSL reached historical feeder league agreements with two elite amateur soccer leagues in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL) in the New York metropolitan area and the Baltimore, MD/Washington, DC based Maryland Major Soccer League (MMSL) to establish the first regional based multi-league promotion and relegation system in the United States. The CSL and MMSL have produced US Open Cup and National Amateur champions and have some of the top amateur teams in the United States so reaching agreements with these elite leagues is an exciting milestone in the history of US Soccer.
The EPSL will continue to make announcements on what clubs will complete in its inaugural season in the coming weeks and months. Due of course to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, actual return to play will be dictated by guidance from federal, state, and local health officials along with applicable soccer governing bodies.
EPSL clubs will be affiliated with the US Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA), through their state associations and, as such, will be eligible to participate in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying rounds, the US National Amateur Cup and state and regional cup competitions.
